Is it okay to look at candidate’s social media?

It’s essential that there is a defined purpose for looking documented prior to any searches being undertaken, and that the candidate has been made aware their online presence may be checked as part of the vetting process. It definitely isn’t ok to snoop across a candidates social media without any thought paid to either of these areas.

Do traditional employment checks give the full picture?

Does verification of names, addresses and credit history tell you a person’s mental wellbeing, work ethic and morals?  If stolen identity information is used by a candidate can you be certain you are screening the right person?  Are you certain that the qualifications, experience and history of your candidates is all correct?

The answer is that traditional checks, as part of a well rounded approach to screening can be useful and a great starting point to understand more about a candidate. By layering open source and social media data on top it is possible to validate information and gain a much wider understanding about a candidate, their morals, their work ethic and any associated risks to your business.

Isn’t this something we can do ourselves?

Vetting a candidate's online presence internally is very challenging, but it is possible. What’s important is to ensure that if it is done internally that you can be 100% confident that all social media accounts are definitely being located for all the people screened.

If they aren’t this introduces a huge bias into the process. It’s also essential to ensure that strict policies and guidelines are in place to ensure staff remain objective. More advice can be found in our download guide to introducing these types of checks.

Should I undertake a criminal record check?

This depends very much on the role. A criminal record check isn’t mandatory for all types of job, and in many cases it could be seen as unnecessary.  We offer a criminal record check as an extra on all our screening packages, and our experts are on hand if you need advice.
